Season Review Day 9. Familiar Name on the C.W.S Honour Board

Our first big event of the year was C.W.S 3 way back in May. Back at Farnham Park for 2018 and under blue sunny skies we hosted 10 teams coming from far and wide. Making up the 10 this year, we had two teams ventured up from Solent, regulars Ladyheath, Chavs and No Balls took their place along with 4 teams made up of the ladies from 4 of the clubs in the Windsor League entered and new team Blitches from the Blitz softball teams.

Group 1

We did our usual of dividing them all into two groups of 5 playing out a round-robin. The action in Group 1, which contained the reigning CWS Cup winners, No Balls, saw the all the teams being a little inconsistent to say the least. With everyone beating each other this was turning into a very interest group. At one point No Balls looked to be in trouble when they lost their 2nd game of the day and their qualification into the Cup was in the balance. It all came down to their last game, and it took an edgy 8-6 win against Pitches Be Crazy to top the group by a solitary run and avoid a potential clash with last year’s runners up and previous winners, LadyHeath.

Group 2

Group 2 was an equally hard-fought group by all teams, and up to the last game any two of the top 3 teams could have all qualified for the Cup, (Never a good thing for the organiser when trying to get teams to the right pitch for their play-off games).

Tropi-gal Twisters lead the group from round 1, Chavs and LadyHeath had vied for second spot through the first two rounds. With pen and paper in hand, the permutations were simply really, if LadyHeath won their game against Cleats and Cleavage that would be enough to put them through, Chavs had to win otherwise they would miss out on the Cup competition altogether. Tropi-gals, who faced Chavs, just needed to match Ladyheath’s result to win the group, anything else and they could drop into the Plate competition.

In the end it was the Tropi-gal Twisters who unfortunately lost out in this final game shoot out as they lost to Chavs. They then needed Ladyheath to loose, but they beat Cleats and Cleavage to secure the final cup place. The group was that close, that 1st ended up 3rd with just one loss in the group phase.

Progress

Group two saw the Scorch-Hers, returning for a second year, not only score a run this time out, but also win a game. Scorch-Hers had the mis-fortune to go through the 2017 event without a run or a win. They are now, not only on the board, but also took their place in the Plate competition for real.

The Trophies start to be handed out.

The bottom team in each group played out their own Spoon final, this year that was between Cleats and Cleavage and RG Blue Sox, with Cleats and Cleavage taking the honours. IMG_4952IMG_4962IMG_4901

The Plate semi-finals saw the Tropi-gal Twisters again miss out, as they fell to the Diamond Squeezers. Blitches halted Scorch-Hers winning run in the other semi. The Cup semi-final saw No Balls beat Chavs to set up a final against Pitches Be Crazy who somewhat surprisingly defeated last year’s runners up, LadyHeath.

The finals saw Blitches over come Diamond Squeezers to win the Plate competition in their first outing in a female event as a club. The main final saw No Balls retain their title beating Pitches be Crazy. The team from Solent were the first team other than No Balls or Ladyheath to reach this stage, which was a huge step forward for the girls from the south coast.

clip_image006This was the third running of C.W.S and each year the level has risen. The group stages this year were the most keenly fought of all previous events, and while No Balls have reached the final each time, the other teams are certainly catching them.

A third straight win is not a foregone conclusion when C.W.S 4 returns in 2019.

No Balls triumph at C.W.S 2

Sunday May 21st saw the second running of Maidenhead Softball Club’s “Chicks with Sticks” tournament. This year 8 all-female teams compete in this one day event, with three new teams entering, RG, TV and Bracknell Scorchers, to complete alongside returning teams from 2016, No Balls, Lady Heath, Portsmouth Dodgers, Sticky Chavs and MSC’s own female team, Diamond Squeezers.

clip_image004Under glorious blue skies, these 8 teams found out a series of round-robin games, to determine the Cup and Plate competition. The competition was hard, but friendly, hitting and fielding that even surprised the resident Cricket team, as well as spectacular catching, made more interesting with fencing on both fields.

Group 1 was won by No Balls, going undefeated, from Lady Heath, Diamond Squeezers then Bracknell Scorchers. Group 2 saw Portsmouth Dodgers pip Sticky Chavs thanks to a final group game win over their rivals. RG came third ahead of TV as the two fought out a 3-3 draw in their final game. This was first draw in CWS history.

The post group stages worked out along the experience lines, with the three new clip_image006teams, plus Diamond Squeezers making up the Plate competition, while No Balls, Lady Heath, Portsmouth Dodgers and Sticky Chavs.

The semi-finals of the Cup competitions started with Portsmouth Dodgers taking on defending champions, Lady Heath. Lady Heath were determined to defend their title and put on a good performance to book their place in the final with a 24-12 win. The other semi-final pitted Sticky Chavs against No Balls. This was a very tight game that could have gone either way, in the end No Balls came out on top 15-12.

The plate semi-finals saw all the local teams face off as TV took on Diamond Squeezers and RG take on Bracknell Scorchers. It was heart break for the host club team as TV beat the Squeezers 5-4 to set a final showdown with RG who shut Bracknell out 8-0.

The Cup competition was a repeat of the 2016 final, No Balls overcame Lady Heath 17-10 to gain revenge on their one run defeat in 2016.

The Plate Final saw two of the new teams, RG and TV fight out a close game, with TV finally winning 10-9.

clip_image008The aim of the day is to provide an opportunity for the female team to play out a fun, relaxed but competitive day of Softball. Although Sticky Chavs did find way to relax between games and it wasn’t talking tactics.

C.W.S 3 will be back in 2018, will we have our first repeat Cup winner or will someone else break the monopoly No Balls and Lady Heath have started?
